They were first sold in the U.S. in 1918, at that time sold in small, rectangular cardboard cartons. The tins so recognizable today were first introduced in the 1920s to help protect the mints and to stay neatly closed in pockets and handbags. Today, the Altoids line includes mints, sours, and gum. Why Are They Called Altoids? The exact origin of the name is unclear, but it seems that during the 19th century confections were given names employing the -oids suffix to imply a medicinal benefit (Altoids were promoted for more than a century as a "stomach calmative," though of course Altoids provides no medicinal benefit). Smith & Company also marketed several other remedies with –oids in their names, such as Benoids for delicate throats and chests, Zenoids for an easy digestion, Cyphoids to defend your throat, and Notoids antiseptic voice and throat pastilles. | | | Features: | |

great productJul 29, 2010 Altoids Peppermint gum is an excellent product; I have not been able to find it in my area,so this purchase was great. The cost was a little more than I had previously paid, but worth the price to get my favorite gum again.
please come back!Jul 14, 2010 So sorry to see that this item seems to have been taken off the market. It is the most refreshing sugarless gum I have ever enjoyed.

We Will Miss Altoids GumJul 07, 2010 Yes,we received our Altoids Peppermint Gum. However,it is our understanding from the Wrigley's Company that they will no longer be making the Altoids Gums in any flavor. We will truly miss this wonderful refreshing gum.
I Depend On this Gum!May 21, 2010 And I mean that in a literal sense. I can hide tins of these all over the house, as I am constantly losing my inhaler (and the doctor will only give me so many of those). The peppermint in the gum has the same action that albuterol does in clearing the bronchial passages. It's also great for when I'm out and someone else has a breathing problem - where you can't share an inhaler, you can give them this gum. I sure hope it's available soon!!
